The Stages of Behavior Change

The Stages of Change

How people progress from not being aware of the need for change to making and maintaining the change.

The Progression of Behavior Change

Stage 1. Precontemplation: We start with not being aware of the need for change. Life is cruising along on autopilot.

Stage 2. Contemplation: Then, a significant emotional event occurs and we contemplate what went wrong and how we recover from the event. May recognize the need for a personal change, but not ready emotionally to make a change.

Stage 3. Preparation: Growing the confidence to make change -- determining the method and establishing the support system.

Stage 4. Action: Taking the actions that lead to making and achieving the change.

Stage 5. Maintenance: Implementing the means and habits the maintain the change.

______

Relapse/Breakdown: An event triggers the old habit and a relapse occurs. The trigger event refreshes the craving for the reward provided by the old behavior. Return to Stage 3.
