1. There are matters that are of concern (i.e., within your power to make changes) and there are matters that are not of concern -- pay attention to the matters within your area of concern. 
2. Influence is the result of demonstrating empathy and integrity (i.e., the power of your word) to people within your area of concern. 
3. Your circle of influence expands within your area of concern outward from your inner circle of people to an ever growing audience as the power of your word grows (i.e., completing what you said you would by the time you promised).  
4. Eventually, your circle of influence grows to a point where your area of concern expands (i.e., expanded scope and authority to make changes).
